One day I was standing in line at the service counter at Albertson’s in Las Vegas, waiting to buy some stamps or something. I couldn’t help but overhear the lady in front of me ask the clerk if they had any boxes.
Now, being the intellectual giant that I am it didn’t take long for me to put 2 and 2 together and determine why this person wanted boxes-she was probably moving! From one house to another!
Selling AND buying! Brilliant! How do I do it?!
So, like any good agent, er, I said GOOD agent, I said, “excuse me, my name is Bob, and how many boxes are you looking for?” She replied “as many as I can get” (Bingo-she’s definitely moving!)
“Well, what’s your address-I live just right around the corner, and I’ll have a couple dozen boxes to your house in 20 minutes, would that be OK?”
I ran over to Home Depot, bought 2 dozen boxes, drove to her house, and an hour later had it listed. Next, I started a search for a new house-there wasn’t much available and I hit a wall. That Sunday, as I was enjoying my cappuccino and newspaper, I saw a home in the classifieds that was a FSBO-sorry, I normally don’t use foul language-a FSBO is a “For Sale By Owner”-well, this house looked perfect for my buyers. I called the owner and asked if I brought a buyer would she pay me (I don’t work for free-I’m kinda funny that way), she said sure-and I sold that home to my buyers. I later on ended up selling their listing, and so I ended up earning 3 commissions just for bringing someone some boxes!
So-how many boxes can I bring YOU?
Epilogue-This was in 2004 during the perfect storm that was Las Vegas real estate. Those days are not only over, so are many careers.
If I had 2 dozen boxes right about now, I’d stack ‘em up, duct tape them together and MOVE IN!
